Liz Balmford?s ?Sing Speak Be?
Written by Webmaster
Monday, 28 March 2011 16:45
Excerpt from the Henley Standard -
http://www.henleystandard.co.uk/news/news.php?id=880332

AT a concert last Sunday, Liz Balmford’s “Sing Speak Be” students
performed for family and friends at the HAODS Studio in New Street, Henley.

Taking place the night before Valentine’s Day, the theme for the evening
was “love, romance and heartbreak”, so the students sang their way
through musical theatre favourites like I Could Have Danced All Night,
Someone To Watch Over Me and Take That Look Off Your Face. They also
regaled the audience with chart ballads such as Make You Feel My Love,
The Weakness In Me and Dream Catch Me, which had the audience sighing
with appreciation.

In her performance coaching practice, Sing Speak Be based in Sonning
Common, Liz teaches singing to adults and coaches youngsters for drama
school auditions and musical scholarships.

By staging regular concerts in tandem with her singing lessons, Liz
hopes to boost the confidence of her students. Liz says: “As a
performer, you make rapid progress if you get the chance to perform in
public, so I like to stage concerts to give my students this
opportunity. The simple act of standing in front of people changes your
performance — and the courage it takes can increase confidence,
impacting on all areas of life.

“This concert was a chance for my students to share their progress with
their peers and to experiment with new material in front of a friendly
audience.”

St Peter's Players (Wolvercote) present: Beauty and the Beast: A Fable in Two Acts
Written by Webmaster
Friday, 25 March 2011 19:52
This delightful little drama society are taking on a beast of a show and
hope to show us big boys how to do it by giving the perfomances of their
lives. It will be a difficult time for us as it is the get-in week for
Follies. However, non-cast members, if you can make it and support
another member of the Oxfordshire Drama Network.

St Peter's Players (Wolvercote) present:

Beauty and the Beast: A Fable in Two Acts

by Barbara Neville

Village Hall, Wolvercote
Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 April at 7.30 p.m.
plus Saturday matinee at 2.30 p.m.
Tickets £7 and £5; please phone 01865 725186
or call in at The Post Box, Lower Wolvercote

Out in the forest, a hunter’s arrow fells a strange beast. There is a
terrible price to pay.

In a village far away, an impoverished merchant’s young daughter longs
for a rose to remind her of her lost mother.

This is the tale of their fates – of what they feared, and what they
learned; of what they lost and what they found.

It is a tale from a time when people believed in magic; and, because
they believed in it, it worked, though not always as they wished, and
not always for the good.
It is a tale about love and loss, about justice and wisdom, about greed
and happiness.

It’s also about sibling rivalry, language skills in dogs and a rather
surprising giant . . .

Forget Disney and rediscover the power of fable.

Facebook 'like this' button on all news articles on the HAODS site.
Written by Webmaster
Wednesday, 02 March 2011 14:09
You may have noticed a new facebook 'like this' button on all news
articles on the HAODS site. This button is not a new thing on sites in
general but it is a new feature for the HAODS site. If you have a
facebook account then you can click 'like this' and it will go onto your
Facebook page when you share it.

I wrote this specifically for HAODS. It generally works, but there were
a couple of teething problems. On a couple of articles when I was
testing, Facebook has stored incorrect text in its cache and it won't
disappear. However, where you click on 'like this' on a nice new article
that no-one has liked before it seems to do the job of inserting the
article link, the subject and some of the article text. It seems to do
it well. Any problems let me know.

Can you please use it every time you like an article in order to
publicise it amongst your facebook friends. Also can you please
encourage the others in the society to do the same. Facebook publicity
is a good thing.

Monday, 28 February 2011 14:28
In my previous post about the Raffles DVD, this will be available at the
showing at 12.30 on Saturday, 5 March at Tim Sloane's place. I omitted
Richard Cleghorn-Brown's contact details. He is _richard@deducit.com_
(mailto:richard@deducit.com) if you wish to place orders. There are 2 disks, Act
1 and Act 2. The price is £10.

To date 13 people have placed orders and at the post-show party on 20
November they gave Julie Huntington a cheque made out to Richard
Cleghorn-Brown. These cheques have been presented. Some other company members may have
said they wanted copies of the DVD but Richard hasn't received the money. If
you fall into this category please send a cheque made out to Richard
Cleghorn-Brown at

site has been hit by spam
Written by Webmaster
Monday, 28 February 2011 12:18
The HAODS site has been hit by spam which has knocked it off line for an
hour or two today. Spam is a terrible problem for all sites these days
and we are dealing with it by removing all public email addresses from
the site. This means that the old info@henleyoperatic.co.uk email
address that would automatically publish here will no longer work.

I have changed the email address to make it harder for spambots to find.
I have also removed it in plain text from the whole site. So to continue
if you want to submit any article, call Julie and she will tell you the
new email address, we just can't publish it here!

Lastly we recommend that you never publish your email address in any
article unless you like receiving spam...

Thanks for your patience

Wow What A Evening
Written by Ann Jenkin
Sunday, 27 February 2011 10:09
"Who Does He Think He Is" - Raymond Burton in Cabaret with David Harrison on keyboard, Paul Netherton on drums at The Studio playing to a packed house. The evening started with songs from the shows, old and new, powerful ballards followed by a pizza supper. Then the roof took off with rock and roll numbers, popular songs, the studio was rocking with audience dancing and singing, what a evening. The good news is that he has promised to come back, if you missed it you missed one of the best evenings that we have put on at the Studio, £10 for a show of that quality and a pizza, you would be mad to missed the next one. HAODS site was unavailable for a hour
Written by Webmaster
Saturday, 26 February 2011 23:08
The HAODS site had some downtime for an hour on Saturday at about
12:30-ish. This was due to some minor changes that had to be put in
place. Sorry if that caused any problems for you. I always try to
minimise any downtime and warn you in advance but sometimes it is
unavoidable. Sorry!

Gallery link now showing latest pictures of Raffles
Written by Webmaster
Wednesday, 12 January 2011 15:51
Some site changes have just been made to your site. We have moved the
show gallery link (the old location down the left hand side) to the top
of the page on the main menu. We could not do this before as the site
was too narrow. Now the site is wider, it fits. The show pics are a good
advert for the society so it makes sense to put them there. They are
also great for members to view their old triumphs on stage.

The old link was a bit buried and not very accessible, the new one is in
a much better location. I have also structured the gallery contents to
make it more friendly there too.

The Raffles pictures are now published so the world can see what a good
job HAODS made of staging this world(!) premier performance of this new
musical.

The New year is now firmly in. May I remind all members that it would be
good for your site to have some new articles, gossip, pictures, whatever
you want to donate. If you have anything to say just post it here by
email or use the little form on the right of this page.

Good bye to a longstanding member.
Written by The Chairman!
Saturday, 01 January 2011 17:39
Sadly I have to report that one of our most longstanding members, Ronny Ball passed away on Christmas Eve at the Sue Ryder Home. He had been very ill with many problems, but fought a brave battle to the end. There will be a memorial service at St Mary's on Friday, 14 Jan at 3pm, for those wishing to attend to pay their respects. Sorry to be the bearer of sad news on this lovely weekend as he was a very long term member of HAODS we owe him our thoughts and prayers.

Raffles and Olivia
Written by Ian Senior (Raffles)
Monday, 27 December 2010 12:47
Raffles and Olivia - another show, a new project
by Ian Senior

By common agreement the book, music and dialogue of Raffles of Singapore
have proved themselves to be strong thanks to HAODS's magnificent
production. We shall follow up West End managements just as soon as Dan Brome
provides us with the DVD. (Would the 26 members who ordered copies from Julie at
the post-show party on 20 November please be patient. Dan keeps telling us
that the DVD is imminent.)

Now Richard and I wish to launch a new three-hander, cut-down musical
titled Raffles and Olivia using the same material but focusing on the
relationship between Raffles and Olivia. We are approaching the East India Club and
other London clubs about presenting the show. Julia Rymer will direct and
Tim Cumper will be MD subject to availability. Alan Elston wishes to play
Raffles but unfortunately Michelle Wesson is not available for Olivia so we
need to recast the part and also to cast the Narrator.

We plan to workshop Raffles and Olivia from 2.00 to 5.00 in the Studio on
Saturday, 22 January, with a run at 5.00 followed by audience discussion at
6.00 finishing at 7.00.

If anyone reading this would like to be considered for Olivia or the
Narrator, please e-mail _iansenior@aol.com_ (mailto:iansenior@aol.com) and I
will send them the libretto. I can be contacted at 01923 400400. Also,
anyone else who was in or saw Raffles of Singapore may want to come to the
run-through at 5.00 in the Studio on Saturday 22 January. (I have been trying
hard to get this date confirmed with Jason Huntley and not having heard from
him I must assume it is OK).

HAODS is supportive of the Raffles and Olivia project but it will be
financed and managed by Ian Senior and Richard Cleghorn-Brown trading as MITE.
It is intended to be a commercial project with payment for all taking part.

Happy New Year.

Ian and Richard
