| THE biggest drawback with open mic nights |
| Written by Daisy O'Halloran |
| Wednesday, 31 March 2010 12:00 |
| Article from the Henley Standard - THE biggest drawback with open mic nights is that anyone can perform — and sometimes they can sap the will to live. But the biggest benefit is also that anyone can perform and stunning material can emerge from unexpected areas. That’s what happened at HAODS’s first Open Mic Night in The Green Room at the weekend — talent by the bucketload — and not a bedroom guitarist in sight.Organiser Daisy O’Halloran went flat out to bring in as much real talent as she could find and it worked. There wasn’t a duff performance from the nine acts and while the audience was sparse, it surely won’t be next time after word has got round. And to top it off, Daisy took to the stage at the end of the night to duet with Bleak Angel’s Tim Balmford in a powerful performance of ballads. This was a throwback to the days of the Sixties and Seventies when folk clubs were the testing ground for new performers. The main difference here was that everyone already knew their craft, and knew it well. There was a rich feast of singing, songwriting and musicianship - and we were spared the post-adolescent dirges of hopelessness which might sometimes take the shine off such an event. If HAODS can keep up this standard then its plan to hold the nights on a regular basis will succeed. |

We have some brand new and highly suitable images for the publicity poster for our up and coming musical "Raffles". The previous poster was in need of improvement having been created over 25 years ago, it was a bit 'eighties'. We have taken on the challenge of creating an up to date and iconic image for the 'naughties'. The preliminary images will appear on the site soon. Keep an eye out here. |
| CELEBRITIES WHO PERFORMED AT THE KENTON PART 2 ? Michael MacLiammoir |
| Written by Bill Port |
| Friday, 26 March 2010 18:10 |
|
Michael MacLiammoir (1899-1978) – Actor, Designer, Playwright, Wit and Raconteur Despite his Gaelic name and his insistence that he was born in Cork, Michael MacLiammoir was an Englishman. He was born Alfred Lee Willmore in Willesden, London on October 25th 1899. As a child he became a member of Beerbohm Tree’s company and appeared in Peter Pan with Noel Coward. Despite all his efforts, Willmore seems to have lost out to Coward for all the best parts and he decided to become an artist and studied at the Slade School, London then at the Willesden Polytechnic School of Art. He later returned to the stage and, while touring with the Anew McMaster Company, he met Hilton Edwards, the man who was to become his life-long partner. Bill
Port's Part 2 of his "Celebrities at the Kenton" can be found on the about us

| The Sinodun Players A number of their Trustees and Members will join us at our Club Lunch in our Green Room on Saturday 17th April (hosted by Mary Dickinson and Jeni Wood). Afterwards, they will be taken on a tour of the Kenton Theatre by it’s Historian (and HAODS Member), Bill Port. – HAODS members can join the tour if they wish. The Sinodun Players, who own, run and perform in the Corn Exchange, Wallingford, bought and converted the building into a theatre in the late 70’s. The first seats in their auditorium came from the Kenton when it was replacing its seats with new ones. HAODS ran the Kenton then and a number of our members helped get these seats into the Corn Exchange. A recent link between the two societies was a loan of one of their top actors (and Trustee) Rod Paddock to play the card sharp in Titanic. |

| May Day Fun Run Your Club?s healthy annual fund-raiser |
| Written by Webmaster |
| Friday, 26 March 2010 11:19 |
| May Day Fun Run Your Club’s healthy annual fund-raiser on Monday 3rd May – start at 11.00 from Regatta Meadows. When we first got this event going many years ago we called it ‘Fun Run’ because we encouraged, and got, a lot of people running in some form of fancy dress – quite a number from HAODS. Come on HAODS – put on a show! There really is room for fun amongst the serious runners. And we want to encourage children, too – so we’ve lowered the entry fee for them – Adults £10 on the day (£8 in advance): children 10 to 15 only £5 (£4 in advance): and under 10 for Free. By the end of this month Entry Forms will be available from Mark Staunton 01189 472389 And we do need the usual lots of help, too, as stewards and all sorts of other ways. Terry Rymer is looking after this part of it all – give him a call on 07786 620622. Surprise him (and it’s helpful, too)– call him before he calls you! |

Green Room Manager Wendy has decided that she needs to devote more time and energy to other things, including her creative work that she does so well – so for the time being this task is taken on by your Secretary, Martin. But he immediately gives a big ‘thank you’ to Jason Huntley, who has volunteered to look after bookings and invoicing. |
| Raffles of Singapore progress being made |

Raffles of Singapore While the Society’s visible efforts are concentrated on The Boy Friend and The Ladybirds, things are happening quietly in the background for Raffles – mostly to do with sponsorship and organising a Gala Dinner at Phyllis Court, tied to our opening performance that evening, in aid of the Alzheimers Society. Andy Smith, as Musical Director, joins Director Julia Rymer. It is understood that Stamford Raffles, in the 1820’s, stayed at The Red Lion in Henley on his second honeymoon. Does anyone know of anything more specific on this? – or any other titbits of info that might be useful in publicity. |

Alan Phillips As many of you will know, Alan has been in and out of hospital fairly often in the last few months – and he’s not finished yet. He expects to be back in soon for more work to a leg. He’s a tough guy – but he wishes he were just acting the part! Best wishes, Alan. |
