Raffles - the man, the musical

Statesman, visionary and zoologist, Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles
is best known in the Far East for his founding of the city of Singapore.
In London, he founded London Zoo in 1826 and was the first president of
the London Zoological Society. Often described as the ‘Father of
Singapore’, he was heavily involved in the conquest of the Indonesian
island of Java removing it from the control of the Dutch and French
military forces during the Napoleonic Wars and contributing immensely to
the expansion of the British Empire. However, Sir Stamford Raffles
founded Singapore in 1819 without permission of the East India Company
and was later financially broken by the company for his pains. This
unique, moving, rags to riches to rags story with some haunting yet
uplifting melodies will delight audiences of all ages, proving that
Raffles’ stoic resolve and love of his wife win through so that he
achieves a moral victory to allow a bitter-sweet ending. Thus he is in
the eyes of many, man, lover & hero!
