'The Mikado - First of any performance in the local cinema.  Presented by the new Henley-on-Thames Operatic Society in about February 1922. The five shows were crowded to the full and scores of people had to be turned away, if they had no tickets, on the Saturday night. In the following years, the Society staged The Pirates of Penzance and The Yeomen of the Guard.'

dsc_0824.jpg Titanic the Musical 2008
The sinking of the Titanic in the early hours of April 15th 1912 remains the quintessential disaster of the Century.   A total number of 1,517 souls, men women and children, lost their lives, with just 711 surviving the horror of that fateful night. The fact that the world's finest, largest, strongest ship "the largest moving object on earth",  infact called the  "unsinkable" ship should be lost during its maiden voyage, is so incredible that, had it not actually happened, no author would have dared to contrive it.

fidler-352.jpg Fiddler on the Roof 2009
Fiddler on the Roof was originally entitled Tevye. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Milkman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem which he wrote in Yiddish and published in 1894.  The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives.  He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each daughter's choice of husband moves progressively further away from established customs—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

Raffles of Singapore - The Musical 2010

Raffles is the haunting and romantic story of the visionary Sir Stamford Raffles who founded Singapore in 1819 without permission from the East India Company and was financially broken by the company for his pains. But his stoic resolve, and love of his wife, win through and he wins a moral victory to allow a bitter-sweet ending. It is of local interest as the couple actually spent their honeymoon in Henley. He is today regarded as a visionary and indeed many will know, and probably have stayed at, the iconic Raffles Hotel which bears his name to this day.
