julie-small.pngWelcome once more to Stage Whispers, your bi-monthly update on what your society is up to! You should also be receiving an email telling you Who is Who in your committee. Your committee work tirelessly for your Society, giving up hours of their free time to ensure the smooth running of shows, studio, publicity and wardrobe and a hundred other considerations that all have to be addressed including the financial and legal requirements. I am extremely lucky to have such a supportive, innovative and dynamic group of people sitting around the table with me and I must thank them for everything they do. Sometimes unpopular decisions have to be made but I can assure you all that these are never taken lightly and are always after a thorough democratic discussion.

Our spring show, Follies was a great artistic success and the audience reaction very positive, many once again saying how good it was to see something different. The cast had lots of fun with the routines and especially the costumes! What girl would not want to get out her best frock and strut her stuff! This Broadway Baby certainly had a great time! It was stylish and elegant and totally in keeping with the era. Our grateful thanks go to Judy Yeates for putting her vision into the production. Sadly this dreadful economic climate produced low audience figures and the Society has sustained substantial losses on the production. Your committee is trying to find ways to replenish our coffers with fund raising ideas. So please, any ideas you may have that you can run with, get in touch with Ann Jenkin.

Spring brings the usual round of one act drama festivals and HAODS entry A Dog’s Life by Pam Valentine is proving quite a hit with audiences and adjudicators alike, with the play netting two overall winners, a myriad of nominations and a punters prize out of three festivals entered so far. Success comes with hard work and we, the cast of A Dog’s Life have certainly worked hard on getting the characterisation spot on.

We have a written critique from Abingdon (incidentally, the adjudicator here, Graham Bill is also a dog trainer so he knows his stuff!) which I shall publish on the website shortly. Don’t forget, we are putting on an award winning drama double bill in the Studio on 15th & 16th July, when we are teaming up with our friends in the Henley Players to present their “Best Actress” award winning play, Roman Fever and of course, A Dog’s Life. This is a fund raising exercise – money we now desperately need - so please – see the flyer for full details and tell all your friends! If you have not managed to catch either play at one of the venues, then please support your Society. Tickets are just £7 and refreshments at very reasonable prices will be available.

It is that time again and Regatta and Festival is just around the corner, so I hope that you all have a great time. Although – it will not be unusual! (Tom Jones – get it?)
