HAODS hope for show’s UK premiere
AN exciting opportunity is in store for Henley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.

A team of professional producers were so impressed with HAODS’ production of Titanic The Musical last year that they are offering them the opportunity to present the UK premier of a musical, performed professionally to great acclaim in Hong Kong and Singapore. It is the story of the life of Sir Stamford Raffles after whom the world famous hotel was named.

Raffles is the haunting and romantic story of the visionary Sir Stamford Raffles who founded Singapore in 1819 without permission from the East India Company and was financially broken by the company for his pains. But his stoic resolve, and love of his wife, win through and he wins a moral victory to allow a bitter-sweet ending. It is of local interest as the couple actually spent their honeymoon in Henley. He is today regarded as a visionary and indeed many will know, and probably have stayed at, the iconic Raffles Hotel which bears his name to this day.

The show has been performed by West End professionals in Singapore and Hong Kong and now seeks a first UK production. Like Les Misérables it requires a large cast of 25 performers upwards, it is based on historical fact and it has beautiful, melodic and accessible music.

Kevin Whately (Inspector Morse and Lewis), who was in the original production, said: “I have such fond memories of our successful runs in Singapore and Hong Kong and always thought it was a shame we never got to perform it in the UK. I think it would work very well and I’d certainly come and see it if I was around.”

Here is your chance to judge the show which, if produced by Henley Operatic, would attract West End managements as well as national theatre critics.
