The Kenton Theatre was founded on 7th November 1805, and is the fourth oldest working theatre in the United Kingdom. The Trustees have recently been fighting to save the theatre, and with the help of the local community, their efforts have been successful! Bryan Villers, Hon Treasurer, explains below about the acheivements so far, and the hard work still to come.
On Friday 20th August, the culmination of the Trustees' efforts to save the Kenton Theatre, when the purchase of the Theatre Freehold from the Henley Municipal Charity was successfully completed. Great support has been received from the community in Henley and the surrounding areas so that, despite the refusal of South Oxfordshire District Council to accede to our request for a grant to make up the anticipated shortfall in the funds raised, nevertheless the Trustees were near enough to the target amount required to have the confidence to proceed with the aid of an interest free loan from a local business, in the knowledge that they should soon be able to raise the remaining amount necessary to repay this.. Fund raising must continue for a further short period for this to be achieved, and donations are still being received in that respect for which we are very grateful.
At some stage in the future we shall doubtless need to consider further fundraising to enable renovation and updating of the various facilities to be considered but we hope to have a period of consolidation and enjoyment of the achievement first!
Bryan Villars
Hon.Treasurer, Kenton Theatre.
