The silver screen was never the same after movie stars began to talk. Stars
who had enchanted millions without saying a word, were now forced to find a
voice, and if they could talk, why not have them sing & dance? Singin' in the
Rain is the story of the making of the first Hollywood musical.
Set in 1927, it humorously satirizes and parodies the panic surrounding the
transitional period from silent films to talking pictures. It has a succession
of unforgettable songs, including 'Good Morning', 'Make 'em Laugh', 'Moses
Supposes' , 'You are my lucky Star' and, of course, 'Singin' in the Rain'
The story is about a dashing, smug but romantic, silent film star and
swashbuckling matinee idol (Don Lockwood) and his glamorous blond screen partner
(Lina Lamont) who are expected to pretend to be romantically involved with each
other. Following the successful first full-length talkie, The Jazz Singer, they
are also pressured by the studio boss (R.F Simpson) to change their silent
romantic drama - The Duelling Cavalier into a talking picture. There's one
serious problem however, the temperamental Lina has a shrill, screechy New York
accent. The Duelling Cavalier is a hilarious disaster but then Don's ex
song-and-dance partner (Cosmo Brown) proposes to turn the doomed film into a
musical - The Dancing Cavalier, and suggests that aspiring actress and dancer
(Kathy Seldon) dub in her singing voice behind the scenes for lip-synching Lina.
The results of their scheming to expose the jealous Lina and put Kathy in the
limelight (and Don's arms) provide the expected happy ending.
